Another Inspection…

Another day, another inspection.  I’m a little weirded out by the capped honey in the second picture – it looks slightly strange to me, but I’m not sure I’ve ever seen capped honey before.

Exciting news: The bees are listening!  They finally starting drawing out comb on my brand new foundation!

First Sting – A Rite of Passage?

Today I received my first sting as a beekeeper.  It was quite stupid on my part.  I was just visiting the bees, one landed on my leg, and (without looking), I swatted assuming it was a mosquito or another bug.  I watched the bee twirl in circles as she pushed the stinger into my leg, then die.  It was quite sad and quickly became quite painful.  I scratched the stinger out as per the instructions from my books (as opposed to pulling it out which tends to leave more venom).

It feels like a rite of passage of sorts.

Second Hive Inspection

We were rather excited to get into the bees today and see they seem to be doing well.  We were even able to catch the queen again!  At David’s suggestion, I stopped feeding them for the week for fear that they were crowding out the queen and not leaving her enough room for brood.   I’m glad we did as the brood pattern looks  a bit better than last time.

As you can see in the second picture, they have still not touched my new frames and foundation and I’m trying not to take it too personally.  🙂  I do hope they start spreading out soon.
